4-H Grab and Go Kits
Bell County offers opportunities for local youth to have additional resources to assist in creativity, fun, and learning. Twice a month, we offer "Grab Bags". These kits include (not limited to) a craft, occasionally another activity, SNAP healthy recipes, and a list of future 4-H events. These grab bags are always free, but we are limited to no more than 25 kits per offering. The future release dates are Feb. 8th, Feb. 22nd, Mar. 15th, Mar. 29th. Grab Bags are first come, first serve. Please visit our office to pick up a kit on the mornings of the dates above. One kit per child please.
County Ham Project
The Kentucky Country Ham Project occurs annually at the Kentucky State Fair. Over 1,000 youth across the bluegrass participate each year. The project begins in January with the salting of the hams. In the spring, the hams are bagged and hung in the hamhouse to cure. In early August, the youth clean their hams and prepare them for presentations at the Kentucky State Fair. The students also must present a speech to a panel during the competition. This year, Bell County has 10 youth that will be participating this summer. In 2022, we had 2 individuals (Sophia Good, 2nd Place, Morgan Lawson, 3rd place) receive state level honors with their speeches. We are very proud of these youth as they represent our county admirably while learning a lifelong skill.
4-H Camp
Bell County will attend 4-H Camp at Camp Feltner in London, KY on June 13-16, 2022. Bell County 4-H set an all-time county record for attendance at 4-H Camp in 2022. Camp is open to any youth aged 9-14. If you have a teen that would like to be a junior counselor, they can assist at age 15. Teenagers aged 16-17 can act as teen counselors. Anyone aged 18 and older can volunteer as an adult leader. We will begin taking applications later this spring. For more information about the camp, or to volunteer as a counselor, please contact the Bell County Extension Office at 606-337-2376.
